The Writing Prompt

One of the things I’ve done for the past 5 years is to create writing prompts for other writers.  I’ve created a website, newsletter, and have even written an e-book.  However, there are a lot of people out there who have no idea what a writing prompt is, or what they are for.

A writing prompt is a word or phrase meant to create an idea in the writer’s mind.  It’s simply something that causes a brainstorm.  These prompts can be used for writing fiction or non-fiction, or can be used to inspire works of poetry or songs.  It’s totally up to the writer.

This also a great tool for when the dreaded writer’s block hits.  In my short time of blogging, I have found times when I couldn’t think of anything to write about that I thought would seem interesting.  That’s when the writing prompts come into play.  The process is very easy.  Sit down and just start writing out little things that come into your mind.  Doesn’t matter if it’s good or not, just write them down.

Now, pick 2 or 3 of those ideas and work with them.  How can you expand on each idea?  What do you know off the top of your head about them?  How many different markets can you write about with just this one phrase?  The possiblilites are endless.

The blogging world has taught me so far, that the main focus is information and power of suggestion.  Some blogs deal with making money, while others deal with products and advertising.  You can create writing prompts for all of these topics.

I am going to leave you with a few writing prompts that you can use on your blogs.  Use them in anyway you want, twist them around to best fit your style, and see what you can come up with.

1.) How has blogging affected your life?

2.) Create an ad campaign for a product you use on a daily basis.

3.) How to make your mark on the Internet.

4.) Why should people read your blog instead of someone else’s?

See where you can go with these ideas.  You can change the words, mix and match, whatever.  These are merely ideas for you to run with, and remember, anytime you feel like you’ve nothing left to write about, make yourself a list of writing prompts.  You’ll be amazed at what you can come up with if you only try.

  1. I’ve never heard the phrase “writing prompt” before, thanks for sharing. I like the idea you describe here, I feel like I get writer’s block too often at times, and it can certainly be frustrating!

  2. writer’s block affects anyone who writes. Whether they are a professional writer, or just trying to run a blog. I’ve gotten writer’s block trying to write a letter. LOL

Give it a shot next time you feel a little less than creative. Or, let me know and we’ll brainstorm together.
