Beyond your comfort zone

One of the first things most people will tell you is that in order to write well, you must write what you know. For the most part, this is very true. However, there may be times when you need to leave your comfort zone in order to grow as a writer.

In order to become a freelance writer, you need to be able to write about whatever the next assignment warrants. A good way to prepare yourself for a subject you don’t know much about is to write down the few things you do know about it. Let’s say you’re asked to write an article about the history of rocketry, but you’ve never even seen one up close, you can still write an interesting paper.

Ask yourself what it is that you know about rockets. Once you’ve listed all the things you do know, then ask yourself about some of the things you’d like to know. Doing a little research is a must if you’re going to do something like this, so make sure you use only reliable references. Then, it’s just a matter of finding what information you’d like to know about and putting it all into form.

If you’re seriously thinking about becoming a freelance writer, you’ve got to be able to bend and sway with the times. Just because you’re an expert in one field, shouldn’t limit you to only write about that subject. The more areas you can write about, the more money you can make in the long run.
